In the year 1980, GEOLOGY & MINING function as a WING under the Umbrella of Industries Department. The Geology & Mining Wing start working in the field of Geology and its allied works in the state of Mizoram to find out The Minerals wealth, conduct Geo-technical Investigation for various  developmental projects as well as to earn revenue for the state. For the past 20 years the department has take n up investigations, Development and Monitoring in the field of  Minor Mineral, Ground Water and Geo-technical section, and after a prolong struggle Geology & Mining Wing was declared as a new Directorate of Geology & Mining on 1st September, 2010. The new Directorate led by Director started functioning  actively and with a vision for Economic development of the country through Geo-Science and exploring  mineral wealth in the state of Mizoram.  The department also diversified its activities in the fields as below:
